Split or Window AC Not Cooling? Try These First

If your AC suddenly stops cooling properly, it doesn’t always mean a major repair is needed. In Indian homes, especially during peak summer, many ACs struggle due to high usage, dust, or overlooked settings.

Before you panic or rush to book a service call, here’s what you should check first. In many cases, you’ll either solve the issue yourself or at least give the technician a clearer idea of what’s wrong.

Step 1: Start with the AC Remote

Before blaming the AC, double-check the remote settings.

• Is the mode set to “Cool” and not “Fan” or “Dry”?
• Is the temperature set above 26°C? Lower it to 24°C for a test
• Try switching the fan speed to high

Also try:

• Reset the remote (some remotes have a small reset hole/button)
• Replace the batteries if the remote display is glitchy or slow

Sometimes the AC is working but set in a mode that doesn’t activate the compressor.

Step 2: Clean the AC Air Filters

In Indian cities with dust and pollution, filters get blocked quickly. A clogged filter restricts airflow and makes it seem like the AC isn’t cooling even if the compressor is working fine.

• Turn off the AC
• Open the front panel
• Remove and rinse the filter under running water
• Let it dry fully and re-insert

If you haven’t cleaned it in over a month, this alone can solve your problem.

Step 3: Listen for the Outdoor Unit (Split AC)

Your outdoor unit contains the compressor and fan. If it’s not running, cooling won’t happen.

Stand near the outdoor AC unit and listen:

• Do you hear a hum or fan noise?
• Is the fan spinning when the AC is on?

If it’s completely silent or the fan doesn’t move:

• Check the power plug or wall socket (some outdoor units have one)
• Inspect the fuse box or MCB it may have tripped
• Still silent? It could be a PCB issue, capacitor fault, or compressor failure you’ll need a technician

Step 4: Look for Water Drips or Bad Smell

If the AC is leaking water inside the room, or blowing a musty or damp smell, there’s likely a blockage in the drain or dirty internal components.

This can cause:

• Reduced cooling
• Gurgling or splashing noise
• Blower motor issues if left ignored

While you can’t fix the drain from inside, you should mention this clearly when you call for service.

Step 5: Give It 10-15 Minutes to Cool the Room

ACs don’t work instantly like fans. If the room is very hot or gets direct sunlight, it will take longer to cool.

• Close windows and curtains
• Let the AC run in Cool mode at 24°C with high fan
• Wait 10-15 minutes and check if the air is getting colder

If it stays warm:

• The gas may be low
• The coil may be dirty
• The compressor may be switching off too soon

These need professional servicing.

When to Call a AC Technician Immediately

If none of the above helps, or if you notice signs of serious faults, don’t wait.

Note: For older ACs (5+ years) or units not serviced in 12+ months, issues like these are more likely.

How to Explain the Problem Clearly to a AC Technician

When you do call service, giving detailed info helps speed things up.

Tell them:

• AC type (split or window), brand, and tonnage
• What’s happening: “No cooling,” “water dripping,” “fan not starting”
• What you’ve already tried: filter cleaned, mode changed, etc.
• Where the outdoor unit is placed (grill, balcony, rooftop)
• When the AC was last serviced

The more details you give, the more prepared the technician will be often resolving the issue in one visit.

Cooling problems aren’t always due to technical issues. In many Indian homes, it’s often just a dirty filter, incorrect mode, or missed servicing.
