How to Prepare Your Room for AC Installation in India – Step-by-Step
Whether you live in a 2BHK apartment in Gurugram or a standalone home in Lucknow, no two rooms are exactly the same. One bedroom may have a clean empty wall, while another might have wall-mounted shelves, grills, or no proper power socket.
If you don’t prepare your room in advance, the AC team might:
- Delay or cancel the installation
- Charge extra for drilling, wiring, or access issues
- Install the AC poorly, reducing efficiency or voiding your warranty
That’s why it helps to get the basics ready even before your AC gets delivered.
Step 1: Check the Wall Where You Want the AC Indoor Unit
The most common AC installation mistake? Choosing a wall without thinking through access, clearance, or airflow.
- Make sure the wall is at least 7 feet high and doesn’t have overhead shelves, wardrobes, or false ceilings
- Remove anything mounted on the wall photos, clocks, decorative frames, LED strips
- Avoid walls that get direct sun all day or face a kitchen or bathroom, unless properly insulated
- If you live on the top floor, choose a wall not directly under a hot concrete slab, if possible
Step 2: Ensure There’s a Proper Power Plug Point Nearby
Most split ACs in India need a dedicated 15A or 20A plug, not the standard 5A socket you use for lamps or chargers.
- If you don’t have one nearby, get an electrician to install it before the delivery day
- Try to place the outlet within 1 metre of the indoor unit location
- If your model doesn’t have an inbuilt stabilizer, you’ll also need space for an external stabilizer (either wall-mounted or on a shelf)
This step alone can prevent the technician from having to reschedule the visit.
Step 3: Plan Where the AC Water Drain Pipe Will Go
Every AC throws out water. And that water needs somewhere to go.
For split ACs:
- The technician will attach a drain pipe from the indoor unit
- Ideally, this pipe should have a gentle slope leading to a bathroom drain, wash area, or outside wall
- If your home doesn’t have a clear path, you may need a drain pump ask the team in advance
For window ACs:
- Ensure the window or wall cavity lets the water drip outside, not back into the room
- Clean the sill to remove debris, mud, or bird nests that block drainage
Step 4: Clear the Floor and Nearby Space
Make room for the AC installation team to move freely with ladders, tools, and packaging materials.
- Move beds, dressers, chairs, or tables away from the installation wall
- Provide at least 3 to 4 feet of open space on the floor
- Keep pets and children away during installation
If you have a split AC that needs an outdoor unit on a balcony or grill, make sure that space is also clear, unlocked, and safely reachable.
Step 5: Protect Furniture and Electronics from Dust
Drilling into concrete or brick generates a lot of dust something most buyers don’t expect.
- Use old bedsheets to cover your bed, wardrobe, or dressing table
- Move delicate items like photo frames, gadgets, and decorative pieces to another room
- Keep a broom, dustpan, and mop ready for a quick clean-up afterward (technicians rarely clean up completely)
If your room has a TV mounted near the installation area, unplug and cover it.
Step 6: Keep Your AC Documents and Support Ready
