If you’re thinking about installing rooftop solar in India, the first thing you need to check isn’t your budget it’s your roof.
In India, not every terrace or roof is automatically suitable for solar panels. From older buildings with aging slabs to houses shaded by trees or mobile towers, there are several hidden factors that can reduce your system’s performance or even make installation risky.
Before you contact a vendor or start calculating savings, use this practical checklist to assess whether your roof is solar-ready.
1. Age and Condition of the Roof Structure
- Is your roof slab cracked, water-damaged, or patched in places?
- Has your terrace been waterproofed in the last 5 years?
- Is the roof strong enough to support panel weight and metal mounting?

- Leaks during monsoon

- Space away from dish antennas, tanks, vents, and staircases

6. Access and Drainage
Even if your roof checks all the boxes above, don’t forget:
- Is your terrace easily accessible for technicians?
- Does water drain properly during rain?
- Can you easily reach the panels to clean them?
Blocked access or stagnant water may not stop you from going solar, but they increase long-term maintenance effort.
